5 Ways to Kick Pet Odor to the Curb

pet odor removal

Pets bring great joy to us. They give us a sense of love, responsibility, and family. Because of what they mean to us, we often concede our time, space, and money to ensure they are comfortable.

In the process, indoor pets may leave a not-so-pleasant odor in their wake.

All mammals have an odor caused by natural bacteria and secretions from their bodies. However, if your pet’s odor is overwhelming, it may indicate a more complicated problem.

Causes of Pet Odor

Pet odor mostly manifests in dogs and cats.

The most common causes of pet odor are bacteria and yeast populating the dark and damp areas of your pet’s body. However, other factors affect the smell of your pet:

  • Skin fold pyoderma: Pets, especially dogs, with skin folds can have musty odors because the area between their folds stays moist all day. Pets with skin fold pyoderma can cause cushions and carpets to smell in their wake.
  • Impacted anal glands: In dogs, anal glands secrete fluid that they use to mark their territories. Dogs use these glands like identity cards. It tells them information about one another. When the gland becomes impacted, dogs may drag their bottoms along home surfaces to relieve the discomfort, leading to horrible and seemingly permanent odors.
  • Urine: Pets that aren’t housebroken urinate around the house, causing an ammonia-like odor. Even trained pets may spray urine on furniture to mark their territories.

Five Tips to Remove Pet Odor

Identify the Cause

Look out for specific areas with strong odors. How do they smell? If they smell stale and yeasty, your pet may be suffering from yeast overgrowth and need a trip to the vet. Most times, however, yeasty pets are dogs.

Changes in your pet’s natural smell can indicate an underlying health condition and should warrant an appointment with the vet.

If you are experiencing pet odor and you only have cats, the “source” is likely your cat’s litter box. Depending on the state of the litter box, you may need to wash it or replace it altogether.

Keep the Room Fresh and Ventilated

When dealing with odors of any kind, the air quality is crucial to removing the odor.

Check air filters for fur, dust, and dander. Also, ensure proper ventilation in the room to help mediate the odor.

Neutralize Furniture Odors

When removing pet odor, it is essential to neutralize odors from furniture, as they cause the smells to linger. Homemade odor absorbers like baking soda and vinegar may help reduce the smell.

To use vinegar, dilute the vinegar with water in a 1:1 ratio.

Spray the solution generously on furniture and use it to mop the floor. Make sure the sprayed areas dry completely afterward.

For baking soda, dust the powder on the affected areas and wait 15 minutes. After the 15 minutes have elapsed, vacuum the powder off the surfaces. Baking soda is an effective absorber against many odors.

Prevent the Situation

All animals, including pets, have a natural odor. Invest in pet shampoos to eliminate this odor in your animals.

Invest in litter for cats, and train dogs not to relieve themselves inside the house.

Involve Professional Services for Pet Odor Removal

Over time, as they are absorbed into home environments, pet odors become hard to remove.

Pet urine, for example, will crystallize and form ammonia vapor if left unattended for an extended period of time.

Ammonia is pungent, corrosive, and unsafe to breathe.

While we love our furry family members, pet odor can be overwhelming to handle on our own. We shouldn’t shy away from seeking a little help in this situation. Professional cleaners are trained and fully equipped to eliminate pet odor.
